- Eurostat reported that in 2020, measured in tonne-kilometres, inland waterway transport volumes decreased by 5.9% as the COVID-19 outbreak weakened business activity and reduced demand. According to Eurostat, after activity levels rebounded by a slight 3.6% in 2021, in 2022, the EU inland waterway freight transport industry recorded a sharp 9.8% drop (or 13 million tonne-kilometres) in freight volumes, reaching its lowest level in a decade. Inland waterways hold untapped potential as a sustainable transport mode
- Inland water transport can play a pivotal role in sustainable freight transport across Europe. According to the European Parliamentary Research Service in February 2022, inland waterway transport is one of the most CO2-efficient transport methods per tonne-kilometre, using only 17 % of the energy needed by often-congested road transport and 50 % of rail transport. As such, it can be viewed as a pivotal part of supply chains, with businesses across Europe looking to reduce their climate impact across the whole supply chain.
