European shipbuilding has contended with fierce international competition from Asian shipyards, which has siphoned sales away from cargo shipbuilders and restricted revenue growth over the past decade. Further adding to the industry’s woes, the COVID-19 pandemic weighed heavily on demand as travel came to a standstill. In 2020, contracting levels at European yards were extremely low, with only 0.9 million compensated gross tonnage (mCGT) ordered, down 64% from 2019. The three EU countries with the most significant order books – Italy (through Fincantieri SpA), Germany and Finland – have suffered from weaker order volumes post-pandemic compared to China and South Korea; figures from SWZ Maritime show that in spring 2023, China and South Korea's global shipbuilding output accounted for 48.7 mCGT and 38.7 mCGT, respectively, compared with EU, Norway and the UK's collective output of 8.5 mCGT.
