Calls to ban Detroit Bulk Storage from operations along Detroit River
December 9th, 2021 City officials have called for Detroit Bulk Storage to be permanently banned from operating anywhere along the Detroit River after the latest in a series of disastrous dock collapses as well as environmental concerns. Taking place on November 26th, 2019, the dock collapse is alleged to have been caused by the company’s improper storage of thousands of tons of raw materials, stored dangerously close to the shoreline of the river. The pileup allegedly caused the seawall to break, dumping it all directly into the Detroit River. The company also came under fire for the improper storage of mounds of petroleum coke powder, which the company did not sufficiently cover in the open air, alongside the Detroit Riverfront in 2013. Detroit Inspector General will oversee the procedures, which will take a hitherto undetermined amount of time.
