Total energy capacity and generation by source
Duke Energy Corporation (Duke) is estimated to have 50.3 gigawatts of generation capacity in 2021. Of this capacity, 31.8% of energy was generated by natural gas and fuel oil in 2021, while 29.8% was generated by nuclear power for the year. The share of generation represented by these two sources has increased over the past several years on account of the corporation investing in clean power initiatives. Still, 18.2% of the company’s energy capacity was generated by coal in 2021, a percentage that has slowly waned over the past several years. Duke plans on closing all of its coal plants by 2035 and more than double its renewable generation capacity by 2030.
ESG|StructuralIn response to volatile demand in the wake of the first COVID-19 surge, the company undertook a comprehensive cost reduction program, aimed at shoring up labor and supply costs.
