Crop & Animal Farming in Europe industry analysis

Meat consumption, health consciousness, government support for agriculture and the availability of meat-free alternatives are key influences on the revenue of mixed crop and animal farmers. Due to their cross-board nature, margins tend to be tight as they lack the resources to specialise in just one area and benefit from economies of scale. The scalation of the Russia-Ukraine conflict in 2022 led to severe disruptions in the supply of cereals and substantially pushed up the price of energy. A combination of rising farm operating costs and powerful downstream buyers controlling contract negotiations limited crop and animal farms’ ability to fully pass on the cost increases, squeezing profitability. Still, industry revenue surged in 2022 as a result of severe inflation across Europe.

European crop and animal farming is becoming increasingly concentrated

  • While the number of farms in the EU has been in steep decline, the amount of land used for production has remained steady, indicating a shift to larger-scale production. Between 2010 and 2020, the EU lost about 3 million farms, almost all of which were family farms, engulfed by bigger farming operations. The most affected EU member states between 2005 and 2022, as a percentage, were Bulgaria (-75%), Hungary (-68%), Poland (-47%), Greece (-36%) and Italy (-34%).

An ageing workforce presents a challenge for the future of European crop and animal farmers

  • The number of farmers is falling in Europe. This is partly the result of consolidation in the farming industry, as larger farms have lower labour requirements due to automation. However, there’s also declining interest in farm work in Europe, particularly among young people, which is leaving small farms at risk of labour shortages in the near future.
