Sustainability-focused packaging regulations will drive revenue, alongside innovation and higher costs
- In January 2025, the EU published a regulation on packaging and packaging waste, known as the Packaging and Packaging Waste Regulation (PPWR). This legislation aims to harmonise national measures and minimise the environmental impact of packaging across the EU. Under the PPWR, from January 1, 2030, EU members will have a ban on single-use plastic packaging for pre-packed fresh fruits and vegetables less than 1.5 kg and some other items. Manufacturers will be able to capitalise on this upcoming regulation by offering fully recyclable, moisture-resistant alternatives. Manufacturers can design ventilated, stackable trays that maintain freshness while reducing material weight. Collaborating with supermarkets and produce suppliers on custom, compliant packaging ahead of the 2030 deadline presents a strong first-mover advantage.
