Computer & Peripheral Equipment Manufacturing in Germany industry analysis

In the last five years, the German market for IT devices and accessories has changed fundamentally. The increasing prevalence of mobile devices is reflected in the growing number of laptops and tablets in private households, while desktop computers are becoming less important. This trend was made particularly clear by the market exit of leading manufacturer Fujitsu in 2020, which led to a drastic decline in industry sales and permanently changed the market structure. As a result, the remaining German manufacturers shifted their focus to specialised niches such as ATMs, terminals and customised IT solutions in order to secure their profit margins and differentiate themselves from international competition. This has enabled some companies to strengthen their earning power, particularly in less globalised market segments. Between 2020 and 2025, the industry's turnover increased by an average of 1.1% per year to 3.4 billion euros.
IBISWorld expects industry turnover to fall by 3.1% in the current year compared to the previous year. The industry is currently dominated by a small number of highly specialised companies with a clear product focus, resulting in high barriers to market entry. Their long-standing customer relationships, sophisticated production processes and certified quality standards make it considerably more difficult for new market players to enter the market. The trend towards flexible, powerful and affordable solutions is continuing, particularly through convertibles and specialised devices for education and industry. While Asian providers are increasingly gaining market share in the low-price segment, German manufacturers are focusing on customised products and niche markets as well as strategic partnerships, particularly with public institutions, in order to successfully counter ongoing competitive pressure and falling margins. < />IBISWorld expects the industry's turnover to fall by an average of 1% per year to 3.2 billion euros by 2030. In the coming years, a significant expansion of production capacities for IT equipment and accessories in Germany remains unlikely due to high costs and strong international competition. Market growth will be driven primarily by innovative niche solutions, after-sales services and investments in research and development. Growth potential arises in particular from trends such as the Internet of Things, rising data volumes and the AI boom, which are increasing demand for specialised server and storage devices as well as IoT-capable hardware solutions. The issue of cyber security is also becoming increasingly important, which is why manufacturers are focussing on secure, automation-capable systems and cooperation with IT security experts. Sustainability and technical innovations are becoming differentiating features in international competition.

Trends and Insights

  • International competitors, particularly from Asia, are dominating the mass market for standardised IT devices with aggressive pricing models, which is increasing the pressure on margins for German manufacturers. Domestic providers are countering this trend with innovative strength and a focus on niche markets and high-quality special applications.
  • The US tariffs on IT equipment and accessories are noticeably worsening export conditions for German manufacturers. Temporary exemptions only apply to a few electronic products, meaning that the industry continues to face uncertainty.
  • Most companies in the sector are located in the Süd region, where manufacturers of IT equipment benefit from the opportunities for cooperation and the availability of skilled labour.
  • Competition within the industry is fierce. The products of the various manufacturers differ only slightly from one another. As a result, the players compete primarily on price, which puts pressure on smaller manufacturers in particular.

Market size and recent performance (2015-2030)

Industry revenue has grown at a CAGR of 1.1 % over the past five years, to reach an estimated €3.4bn in 2025.

Trends and Insights

The increasing spread of mobile devices is shaping the market for IT devices and accessories

  • Between 2017 and 2022, the amount of IT equipment in private households in Germany changed significantly. According to the Federal Statistical Office, the proportion of households with stationary computers fell from 48.6% to 42.9%. At the same time, the number of laptops and notebooks has risen from 70.8% to 75.5% and tablets from 42.6% to 55%. The number of devices per 100 households is also particularly noteworthy. While laptops/notebooks rose from 98.4 to 111.8 and tablets from 55.8 to 77.9, the figure for desktops fell from 60.7 to 53.7. Industry outlook (2025-2030)

Market size is projected to decline over the next five years.

Trends and Insights

Computer manufacturers have little incentive to expand their production capacities in Germany

  • The likelihood of major manufacturers of IT equipment and accessories opening many production facilities in Germany or significantly expanding existing capacities over the next five years is low. High personnel, bureaucracy and energy costs as well as the German government's strong focus on promoting the software industry and digitalisation continue to make the country unattractive for international investors. In addition, the market potential in Germany is limited, as the market for desktop PCs, notebooks and peripherals is almost saturated.
