Electronic & Telecommunications Equipment Wholesaling in Germany industry analysis

In recent years, the wholesale of electronic components and telephones in Germany has been characterised by strong fluctuations and structural changes. After a boom in demand triggered by digitalisation, electromobility and connectivity solutions, the industry was hit by a global chip shortage caused by production stoppages and increased demand during the pandemic. Companies had to fundamentally rethink their procurement and warehousing concepts to mitigate shortages and price spikes. At the same time, geopolitical tensions and technical innovations with short product cycles made long-term planning more difficult. Industry sales increased by an average of 4.5% per year between 2020 and 2025. This was mainly due to the strong increase in sales in 2022, when wholesalers sold large quantities of products at higher prices due to high demand and product shortages. In the following years, 2023 and 2024, however, sales declined due to excess stock held by customers. In 2025, industry sales are expected to increase by 2.7%. In view of far-reaching market changes, the wholesale sector for electronic components and telephones in Germany is increasingly focusing on digitalisation, sustainability and value-added services. Wholesalers are increasingly focussing on the automation of procurement and logistics processes and the expansion of digital platforms in order to serve customer needs faster and more efficiently. Value-added services such as technical advice, application-specific assembly and support with ESG-compliant procurement are becoming increasingly important. At the same time, opportunities are arising in growth markets such as electromobility, smart energy systems and IoT applications. The focus is shifting from standardised products to customer-specific, tested components, while players are strengthening their position in the changing market environment through proactive risk management and innovation partnerships. < />In the next five years, industry turnover is expected to grow by an average of 2.1% per year and reach a value of 71 billion euros in 2030. The wholesale of electronic components and telephones in Germany is increasingly developing into a technology and consulting-orientated system partner. In the coming years, the industry will be characterised by high demands on product innovation, sustainability and cyber security. Wholesalers are increasingly investing in digital procurement and track-and-trace systems, expanding technical consulting and application development and cooperating more closely with manufacturers and start-ups. The implementation of the Cyber Resilience Act and increasing traceability and compliance requirements pose challenges, but also promote quality and sustainability standards. While growth in the smartphone segment is stagnating, niche markets and innovative applications for industry, IoT and smart devices are gaining in importance and offer new sales potential.

Trends and Insights

  • Electronic components are now indispensable in many applications, which is boosting demand for industry products. Advances in technology and miniaturisation mean that more and more electronic components will also be needed in the future.

Trends and Insights

Wholesalers of electronic components are gearing up for the smart, sustainable industrial structure of the future

  • The increasing electrification and decarbonisation of important industrial sectors is fundamentally changing the requirements for electronic components. Technological drivers such as wide bandgap power semiconductors (such as SiC and GaN components), highly integrated power management ICs, MEMS-based sensor technology, digital signal processors, multiband communication modules and specialised embedded controllers are indispensable for applications in high-performance inverters, intelligent energy storage systems, charging systems for e-mobility, industrial automation and building-wide control systems (smart buildings/smart grids). The technological complexity and interoperability of these systems require that the components used are not only energy-efficient and robust, but also IoT and cloud-capable and have interfaces for predictive maintenance and condition monitoring.
