The collapse of Vale’s dam and weather disrupting production by BHP Billiton and Rio Tinto led to large price increases in 2019. While iron ore prices initially dropped following the outbreak of COVID-19, they recovered in 2020 as China's 2020 stimulus plan and infrastructure investments spurred strong demand for iron ore.
