PetSmart location in Toronto first of its kind to unionize
February 11th, 2022 A PetSmart in Toronto has become the first of its kind to unionize after working through sub-par conditions that arose due to the Omicron coronavirus variant. Staff claimed that they were forced to cope with chronic understaffing and longer hours for no additional pay. The staff voted to unionize with the United Food and Commercial Workers, one of the largest private sector unions in Canada. In a statement to The Globe, PetSmart said that while it did not believe unionization was “in the best interests” of its staff, it respects their choice and will work with local union leaders to “achieve an agreement that is equitable to our team and to PetSmart Canada.”
COVID|Labor|Competition|ESGIn response to volatile demand in the wake of the first COVID-19 surge, the company undertook a comprehensive cost reduction program, aimed at shoring up labor and supply costs.
