Southwest Continues Sustainability Efforts with 15-Year Agreement for Aviation Fuel

In November 2021. Southwest announced it had entered into a 15-year agreement with Velocys Renewables LLC (Velocys) for 219 million gallons of sustainable aviation fuel. Velocys stated that for the duration of the contract it will be able to produce the equivalent of 575 million gallons of net zero fuel and reduce CO2 by 6.5 million metric tons. Southwest anticipates purchasing fuel as early as 2026 from Velocys’s Mississippi facility. This agreement is integral to Southwest’s long term sustainability goal of replacing 10.0% of total jet fuel with sustainable aviation fuel by 2030.
