IBISWorld forecasts the male population aged 18 and older to increase by 2.0% during 2023-24, to reach 10,480,202 people. The growth rate of the male population aged 18 and over is projected to increase during the year, in line with the stronger growth in the total population aged 18 years and older. This is due to eased border restrictions in previous years, which is allowing net migration to increase strongly in consecutive years. Border restrictions were in place over the three years through 2021-22, in order to prevent the spread of COVID-19. These restrictions limited net migration over the period, contributing to weaker growth rates in the male population aged 18 and over. In a typical year, increased net migration is expected to contribute to growth in the male population aged 18 and older, as many migrants are young males of working or studying age.
Over the past five years, the male population aged 18 and older has grown. The key drivers of population growth for males in this age group are increasing life expectancy, net migration rates and the number of births 18 years prior. While growth in net migration prior to the pandemic bolstered the total population aged 18 and over, weak birth rates between 1999-00 and 2004-05 limited overall growth in the demographic. Overall, IBISWorld forecasts the male population aged 18 and older to grow at a compound annual rate of 1.6% over the five years through 2023-24.
