The Canadian population is aging. The median age has risen uninterrupted for several decades, with the previous five-year period not being an exception. The uptick is driven by two distinct trends: a declining birth rate and an increase in the expected lifespan of Canadian citizens. The declining birth rate per 1,000 persons has been partially offset by the fact that the population as a whole has grown. However, at the other end of the age spectrum, the number of senior adults has steadily risen, too. Advances in medical technology, better safety features in all aspects of life, heightened health consciousness and improved nutrition knowledge have all contributed to Canadians having a better chance of living longer than ever before. There are more younger people in the country now, partially because of immigration boosts, which have been dragging down the population's median age.
