Recent Trends – Number of adults aged 20 to 64

Adults are projected to make up 59.7% of the Canadian population in 2025, the first time the cohort's share of total population has been under 60.0% since 1983. This is a decline from its 2020 share, when adults accounted for 60.6% of Canada's total population. This is attributable to the baby boomer generation that was born between 1946 and 1965. This generation created a "demographic bulge" that resided within the boundaries of individuals between 20 and 64 years old until recently, but has started to transition into the 65 and older demographic. As a result, the growth rate for the number of adults has started to slow and is projected to continue this deceleration during the outlook period. Furthermore, birthrates in Canada have been declining over the past 30 years, reducing the number of individuals that would be aging into this demographic to replace the baby boomer demographic.
