Individuals aged 19 and younger will make up an estimated 21.0% of the Canadian population in 2023, down from 21.8% in 2018. This segment of the population has declined as a percentage of the population over the past three decades, down from 23.4% in 2009 and 26.3% in 1999. The population segment has declined as the Canadian baby boomer generation continues to age, causing the average age of the Canadian population to rise. Additionally, there has been a large decline in the birth rate over the several decades, contributing toward an aging population and reducing the number of people in the cohort. For example, in 1970, Canada's birth rate was 2.26 births per woman, which declined to 1.63 in 2010, and is expected to remain unchanged from its 2013 levels of 1.6.
