Recent Trends – Per capita poultry consumption

Poultry consumption has experienced relatively sustained growth since the 1980s. This trend is largely due to Canada's rising population, chicken's low-fat content and the publication of various medical studies linking red meat, poultry's main substitute, with heart disease. In fact, poultry overtook beef as Canada's most-consumed meat in 2000. Since then, the gap between poultry and beef consumption has only increased and poultry continues to account for a rising share of overall meat consumption in Canada. However, per capita poultry consumption declined in 2010 and 2011 as adverse economic conditions constricted consumers' disposable incomes. This trend caused protein consumption, including poultry, to fall across the board. More recently, this trend has reversed with the per capita consumption of poultry. However, the COVID-19 pandemic again restricted consumer spending, resulting in a 2.6% decline in 2020 alone. But the gradual reopening of the economy helped boost consumption rates again in the period. However, inflation rates have also played a role against more consumption rates in the period, keeping potential boosts more tempered through the five years to 2025.
