Definition of Domestic corn production

Domestic corn production represents the total annual harvest of corn grain in the United States, measured in millions of bushels. This includes all corn varieties grown for grain production, encompassing field corn used for livestock feed, ethanol production, and industrial applications, as well as sweet corn for human consumption. The data reflects actual harvested production from planted acreage across all corn-producing states. Data is sourced from the U.S. Department of Agriculture.

Recent Trends – Domestic corn production

Domestic corn production reached 15,186 million bushels in 2024, representing a 1.0% decline from the previous year. This slight decrease reflects mixed growing conditions across major corn-producing regions, with some areas experiencing optimal weather while others faced challenges from irregular precipitation patterns and temperature variations. Despite the modest decline, production remains at historically high levels, supported by continued adoption of advanced seed varieties and precision agriculture technologies that have enhanced yield potential across the Corn Belt.

Domestic corn production has demonstrated both remarkable growth potential and inherent volatility over the past five years, with output ranging from 13,651 million bushels in 2022 to a peak of 15,342 million bushels in 2023. The period followed below-average production in 2019 due to widespread planting delays and flooding in key growing regions, with a recovery to 14,087 million bushels in 2020 as conditions improved.

Production surged to 15,018 million bushels in 2021, reflecting excellent growing conditions and increased planted acreage responding to strong commodity prices and robust demand from both domestic and international markets. However, 2022 saw a significant decline to 13,651 million bushels as drought conditions across major corn-producing states severely impacted yields, particularly in Iowa, Illinois and Nebraska.

The dramatic rebound in 2023 to record levels demonstrated the resilience of US corn production systems and the effectiveness of modern agricultural technologies in optimizing yields under favorable conditions. This volatility underscores corn production's continued sensitivity to weather patterns, despite technological advances in drought-resistant varieties and precision farming techniques. Strong export demand and expanding ethanol production have supported maintained acreage levels throughout the period, while government conservation programs have influenced planting decisions in marginal areas.
