Recent Trends – Number of deaths

Historically, the number of annual deaths in the United States does not fluctuate wildly. With a few exceptions, the number of deaths typically increases slowly over time in line with the expanding population. Trends in the number of deaths, while partially affected by macroeconomic developments, are primarily influenced by demographic trends.

The ongoing trend of a higher number of deaths is the consequence of the aging of baby boomers and others who were part of the country's population surge in the mid-20th century. As the elderly population increases, often fatal ailments associated with age become more prevalent, leading to increased deaths. In 2020, amid the COVID-19 pandemic, a significant boost in the number of deaths were reported in the US because of the varying negative effects the pandemic had on many individuals' health in the year. In 2020 alone, the number of deaths increased 18.7%. Even with the rollout of the COVID-19 vaccine, the coronavirus contributed to present a major problem for many people in the following year as the number of deaths went up 2.4% in 2021. However, with the passing of the pandemic, as more people have gotten vaccinated, the number of deaths slumped 0.4% in 2022. But, despite the passing of the pandemic, the number of deaths is set to climb up by 2.0% in 2023 as the presence of health-related conditions that have not been cured will present a major cause of concern for many demographics in the year. However, ongoing releases of life-saving medicines will help lower these numbers in 2025 along with ongoing benefits for older adults with life savings and social security to get proper treatment via their insurance, helping regulate deaths in the period.
