Recent Trends – Population

In 2025, the US population is estimated to reach 338.0 million, increasing by 0.45% from the previous year. Growth remains subdued as birth rates are low while longevity continues rising, leading to an aging population. Medical innovation and heightened health awareness support longer life spans, which have contributed to modest ongoing population gains. The median age in the US also continues to edge upward annually.

Between 2020 and 2025, population growth averaged 0.4% per year, bolstered modestly by immigration and the continued effects of increased life expectancy. The slow expansion reflects persisting demographic headwinds, including declining fertility rates and changes in family formation patterns. Multiple years saw low year-over-year growth, with annual increases of 0.2% and 0.4% in 2021 and 2022, respectively. Restrictive immigration policies implemented during the Trump Administration and stricter enforcement further suppressed population expansion during much of this period. Measures such as Title 42, intended to limit undocumented immigration during the COVID-19 pandemic, contributed to historically slow population growth coming into the 2020s.

Despite these trends, the United States remains a sought-after destination globally, which continues to support immigration-driven growth. Policies to grant temporary protected status and asylum to individuals fleeing global conflicts have provided an incremental lift to population figures in recent years.

From 2020 to 2025, macroeconomic trends of slower household formation, ongoing improvements in healthcare, and evolving immigration policy have combined to shape a moderate yet sustained increase in the US population. These patterns underscore both the resilience and the demographic challenges of the US, including the aging population profile and subdued birth rates, which are expected to persist as dominant structural forces through the current period.
